Coco Juku


Coco Juku is an English conversation school (eikaiwa) in Japan.

The company was founded in 2012 by Nichii Gakkan, which also owns Gaba Corporation. In April 2012 is opened 6 locations and by October there were 62 locations. They plan to open further locations over the following months.

In line with their opening they have invested heavily in marketing and advertising both for students and teachers.

Interview, Pay & Conditions

New teachers are required to give a sample lesson (possible over Skype) and a written test. Typical interview questions have included, Please give us an example of the present perfect tense and What is your greatest weakness.

Teachers must be native speakers with a degree and a TEFL Certificate.

Salary is reasonable for Japan starting at about 250,000 JPY or $3150 USD (€2492, £2004) per month. Daily transport is paid and teachers are enrolled in pension and health insurance via the company. There is a 1000 JPY or $15 USD (€12, £10) for signing a new student up to the school.

Conditions vary between branches but some reports suggest that hours are long, about 8 hours per day (excluding breaks), with shifts between 7 in the morning and 10 at night totaling 40 hours per week (not split shifts though). Although some schools have children, many are involved with teaching English to adults.

Coco Juku requires all employees, including foreign teachers, to belong to their in-house union. In addition, some instructors belong to the General Union.
